Welcome to an engaging and fascinating study of architectural styles as we step through time and learn the history of architecture by studying the examples of the very unusual historic architectural styles in Huntsville. Since we can’t very well visit Rome, London and Paris, who knew it was possible to trace the history of architecture by touring Huntsville, Texas?

From studying log cabin buildings to the most modern architecture by Artist Dan Phillips, Huntsville provides a fascinating array of buildings and building styles. With a visit to the Sam Houston Memorial Museum, we will be able to develop an understanding of log cabin construction from single pen cabin to dog trot and double pen and the amazing variety of styles used in their construction. The cladding of log cabins with sawn lumber showed increasing wealth and prestige. The availability of sawn lumber meant the rise of homes in the Greek Revival style, followed by the 1911-1912 Queen Anne columns to make homes resemble idealized plantation homes of which there are a number in Huntsville, including the magnificently renovated “Top o’the Hill” house on Lake Road.

The arrival of wealth produced French style homes in the various subdivisions. Frank Lloyd Wright influenced the new straight-line architectural styles and the ranch-style homes of the 1950s. Huntsville is particularly fortunate to have Artist Dan Phillips creating his unusual Hat House and Boot House along with many other creative masterpieces often belonging to the people that built them. We will even get a chance to see the modern architecture on campus and the stacked container homes nearby.
