You'll receive a fascinating review beginning with the earliest settlers who came to this "Cultural Center" of Texas.
Learn about the amazing growth of this hidden gem of a town founded by Alabamian Pleasant Gray who received
his 7-square-mile grant from the Mexican government in 1835. Little surprise that men like Henderson Yoakum
and his friend, Sam Houston, chose this as their home as they helped found half a dozen schools, academies,
colleges, institutions and universities. Huntsville very nearly became the capital of Texas! You'll also hear wild
stories of illicit romances and threatened assassinations, haunted houses and hangings as you walk around
our Town Square. You can complement this tour with a walking tour of the Cemetery where you'll actually see
the gravesites of these famous people.
4pm - Begin at our offices just off the Downtown Square.
Walk past the offices of the Gibbs Brothers who have been in business since the 1840s!
Hear stories of the Smither ghost and of strange moving merchandise.
Around the corner explore the Old Jail and the 1930s Post Office building.
Stop for lunch at Sam's Table and see photos of early Huntsville.
Learn about The Raven and the earliest integration of a restaurant in Texas.
See the murals of Dana Andrews who ran the projector at the Old Town Theater.
Take a look at the Henry Opera House where the first moving pictures were shown.
Come down the hill to the Cafe Texan, one of the oldest Cafes in Texas.
End by enjoying the Trompe L'oeil Haas Murals across the way.
