Huntsville is the home of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. The administrative offices for the state of Texas and ten prisons are located in Walker County. Over 26,000 inmates are housed here, with thousands more housed around the state. TDCJ has over 5,766 employees in Walker County, including both guards and administrative staff, making it the largest employer in the county by far. Our tour features The Walls Unit, the Joe Byrd Prison Cemetery, the Goree Unit, followed by the Byrd, Wynne and Holliday Units. After a stop for lunch, we will spend the afternoon exploring the Texas Prison Museum.
Itinerary
9:00 am - Pick up your party or meet at our offices in Huntsville.
10:00 (approximately) Begin our tour at The Walls Unit in downtown Huntsville.
Although we will not be allowed in the units, we will be able to view the many buildings from vantage points outside.
10:30 - Drive out to visit the Joe Byrd Cemetery.
11:00 - Trip out to the Goree Unit.
11:30 - Back up 75, we will drive up Smith Hill Road and pass the Byrd Unit
12:00 - View the huge acreage of the Wynne Unit.
12:30 - Crossing under the Interstate, we will pass the Holliday Unit.
1:00 pm - Lunch at a local cafe.
2:00 - 4:00 - Plenty of time to explore the Prison Museum - lecture by Museum Director
5:00 - Return to point of pick up.
