During the 1840s, German and Polish families arrived in Matagorda and made their way inland to the lands given to them by their leaders. These Catholic settlers were dedicated to their religion and spent time, money and much, much effort in building the churches which we see today. Their skills at carpentry were only second to their amazing artistic abilities in decorating the interior of the churches. The town of Schulenburg offers guided tours of three of the churches. We will drive down to Schulenburg as we listen to the fascinating stories of how these people came to settle the area. At the Tourism office in Schulenburg, we will pick up a guide who will take us to two of the churches, followed by a delicious lunch, and then a visit to the last of the churches. We'll head home with a full head, full heart, and full bellies!
