After the defeat of the Texians at the Alamo in March of 1836, Mexican General Santa Anna led his army eastward seeking Sam Houston's army. Houston had gathered the Texians at Gonzales and moved his men toward the American border hoping for American help. His men turned south at the Which-way Tree and the army reached San Jacinto where they encountered Santa Anna and his troops.
After a brief skirmish on April 20, Sam Houston prepared for battle on April 21. Santa Anna waited for an attack in the morning, but when Sam Houston didn't show up, Santa Anna had his men settled down for the day. At 3 that afternoon, while Santa Anna was napping, Sam Houston ordered his men to attack. Houston caught the Mexican army unaware and defeated the larger force in less than an hour. Most of the Mexican army surrendered or were killed by the Texians. Santa Anna was captured and forced to sign a peace treaty granting Texas it's independence.
